Most first-time visitors to Belize head straight to Ambergris Caye and San Pedro — and for good reason. The north has the widest infrastructure, the most dive shops, and Hol Chan Marine Reserve minutes offshore.
But a growing number of travelers are discovering that southern Belize offers something the north cannot: quieter reefs, authentic Garifuna culture, and private cayes where your only neighbors are palm trees and parrotfish.
Dangriga: gateway to the southern reef
Dangriga is the capital of the Stann Creek District and the heartland of Garifuna culture in Belize. The town itself is low-key — fishing boats, drumming workshops, and hudut restaurants rather than beachfront resorts.
